M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) established in 1988 is a not-for-profit trust. MSSRF was envisioned and founded by Professor M S Swaminathan, agriculture scientist with proceeds from the First World Food Prize that he received in 1987. The Foundation aims to accelerate use of modern science for sustainable agricultural and rural development. MSSRF focuses specifically on tribal and rural communities with a pro-poor, pro-women and pro-nature approach. The Foundation applies appropriate science and technology options to address practical problems faced by rural populations in agriculture, food and nutrition.
About The Garden
The Botanical Garden at CAbC is a matchless place where botanical diversity is seen at its best! The garden is set in about 10 ha of land, and has 10 major zones and 6 minor components that are under development with diverse representative species of tropical flora (see table below). All these components are in continuous growth. Differing from the conventional concept of Botanical Gardens, MSSBG gives equal priority to wild, natural and cultivated traditional and horticultural species and varieties of plants. The Garden pays special attention to conservation of Rare, Endemic and Threatened (RET) species of southern Western Ghats.
Uniqueness of MSSBG
- A total of 2,033 live plant species have been conserved in the Garden, of which 512 are endemic to Western Ghats and 579 falling under IUCN’s threatened plant species category.
A Museum collection of specimens of local rice landraces
Non Wood Forest produces and mushrooms are also form the part of the Garden, which gives a historical account of changing priorities of crops and plants species in the livelihoods of local communities
